- Static Seal – A seal that is not subjected to relative movement of the components to be sealed
- Examples:
- O-rings
- Gaskets
- Bonded washers
- Dynamic Seal – A seal that is subjected to reciprocating and/or rotary movement of the components to be sealed
- Examples:
- Rod seals
- Piston seals
- Wipers/scrapers
- Oil seals (rotary shaft lip seals)
- Swivel seals
