Decades of industry-leading fuel metering experience, combined with in-house servo control and innovative technologies, enables elegant, cost-effective solutions. Whether for a new application or a transparent, competitive displacement, our dedicated onsite engineering support ensures a flawless Entry Into Service (EIS).

Main Fuel Pump

Woodward provides the most thermal-efficient and cost-effective fuel pressurization solutions through integration of proven technologies into an optimized pumping solution. Our analysis team’s proprietary tools enable engine OEMs to optimize their fuel systems across a variety of factors, which include lifecycle costs, horsepower draw, reliability, and thermal efficiency. Woodward offers reliable, efficient, and low-cost pumps, in both stand-alone and integrated solutions.

Heat Exchanger

Woodward heat exchangers are part of a complete thermally managed fuel system solution. As part of the total system solution, Woodward integrates the heat exchanger or several heat exchangers, minimizing piping runs and total line replaceable units (LRUs) by combining functionality where possible.

Fuel Filter

Filtration is critical to protecting the fuel system. Woodward specifies the requirements for the filter and the enclosure, designs the resulting filter module into the integrated fuel system, and maximizes ease of access for maintenance.

Integrated Propulsion Systems

Electrical System

Woodward meets customer goals for quality, performance, delivery and cost through our breadth of engine fuel delivery products, our integrated approach to components and service, and our mission to maintain a system perspective. By supplying the entire turbine engine control and combustion system, Woodward offers ease of business through a single point of contact and helps customers realize significant savings:

  • Lower development costs Reduced system risk
  • Simplified logistics Improved integration

Electronic
Engine Control

Woodward works with the engine OEM to understand and resolve their complex engine control system dynamics issues. Designs may result in engine control line replaceable units (LRUs) or may be incorporated into another LRU for local control.

To mitigate effects of component obsolescence and to leverage cost advantages, COTS (Commercial Off the Shelf) components are used where possible in the design of the electronics.

O/S Software is developed per DO-178B and certified to level A and is subdivided into operating system (OS) and application software (AS).

Woodward’s new product introduction (NPI) process is built on a solid foundation of design for six sigma (DFSS) tools, incorporating design for reliability (DFR), design for producibility (DFP), and design to cost (DTC) scorecards from requirements definition through certification.

Permanent Magnet Alternator

Permanent Magnet Alternator (PMA) supplies power to an Electronic Engine Control (EEC), which is part of the turbine engine control system. The PMA is typically driven by the accessory gearbox drive shaft. The mechanical rotation of the drive shaft is converted into electrical energy by the PMA. Woodward has used their expertise in Fuel Metering Unit packaging, design and manufacture to integrate the alternator within the fuel control up to speeds of 12,000 RPM. Advantages include a smaller “system” footprint and one fewer LRU (Line Replaceable Unit).

Sensor Suite

Woodward’s broad sensor offering enhances our ability to meet customer cost and performance requirements. By monitoring key engine parameters, Woodward controls are able to eliminate variation previously addressed using costly manufacturing techniques. Woodward has also demonstrated our ability to derive engine parameters such as fuel flow without flow meters or remaining fuel level without tank floats.

Woodward has also developed low-cost sensing solutions, such as Hall Effect technologies, that can be applied to ancillary control functions. We have developed local control modules that close the ‘inner loop” at the line replaceable unit (LRU) and accept only basic ‘outer loop’ demands from the main Electronic Engine Control.

Yaw Pedal Assemblies (Rotorcraft Application)

Woodward’s low-profile design for rotorcraft applications does not impede pilot vision out the nose of the vehicle. Our designs for these units allow interface with braking system sensors. We incorporate motor-driven pilot-adjustment features as required. Typical rudder pedal units contain brushless RVDTs for maximum sensor reliability.

Rudder Pedal Assemblies (Fixed Wing Application)

Woodward uses a LRU (line-replaceable unit) “hanging pedals” design platform for fixed-wing aircraft where visibility is not a concern. These pedals are easily replaceable and can be mounted on the aircraft floor; to maximize serviceability, the pedals can be mounted in the flight deck bulkhead. The rudder pedals pivot from a hub that translates above the pedals, suspended by the rudder pedal unit chassis. Woodward designs usually feature brushless sensors for yaw control, electronic trim adjustment, motor-driven pilot adjustment, as well as interfaces for brake transducers.
